Legislative establishment of the State Motor Pool:

Alabama Legislature Act No. 471, 1969
The Legislature of the State of Alabama, during the Regular Session 1969, enacted Act No. 471 which was further amended by the Code of Alabama 1975, Title 41-17-3 through 41-17-8. This Act placed the responsibility of establishing a transportation pool with the Department of Finance. The purpose of the State Motor Pool is to provide motor vehicle transportation for state officers and employees who do not have automobiles regularly assigned to them.

The State Motor Pool (SMP) today:
There are currently more than 200 cars and vans in the SMP. We provide fuel, maintenance and other services to more than 220 state agencies. The State Motor Pool operates on a revolving fund and receives no monies from the State General Fund Budget.
